250 things architects should know: How people pee

No. 143: How people pee There are different ways to pee, mostly depending on gender and personal preference. Humans like to do their business sitting or standing. While in the animal kingdom there is no specific place to pee, humans like to use the toilet. The amount of urine depends on how full the bladder is, which in humans is approx. 0.5 to 0.7 litres (compared to an elephant: 18 litres, cat: 0.05 litres). Surprisingly, according to a US study, urination in mammals always takes the same amount of time, namely almost exactly 21 seconds (feel free to count next time!). A generally applicable rule for peeing is: never against the wind!
