The standards for earthquake-proof construction

The standard regarding design for earthquake-resistant construction in Austria is ÖNORM B1998-1 to 6, latest edition 01.07.2017. Earthquake-resistant construction began in Austria after 1945 with ÖNORM B 4000-3. Since 1998, Eurocode 8 (EN 1998) has regulated "the design of structures against earthquakes". The structural design for the construction of new buildings in accordance with this standard is a mandatory legal requirement and must be carried out by a structural engineer or a civil engineer with the appropriate authorisation. In addition to the static standards, there are also design and operational requirements for the installation of lifts, for example, regulated in the EN 81-77 standard. The DIN EN/IEC 60068-3-3 standard is primarily responsible for switchgear and other electrical and information technology infrastructures, independent systems.
