What qualities does an architectural firm you work with need to have?
Space efficiency and maximum usable space are of course economically important for us as property developers, but the well-being of future users is a priority. This is often a balancing act that our partners perform together with us. And: nobody wants to live in a boring house. The aim is therefore to create aesthetically pleasing buildings with economically justifiable means. What is also important to me is that we want partners who, like us, have handshake quality. And that is definitely the case with Hawlik Gerginski.
Can architecture inspire? What is necessary for this?
Of course. Architecture is an important art form. It has to trigger emotions, preferably positive ones, of course. This is also a major challenge and also a balancing act between the necessary polarisation and meeting as many tastes as possible. Architecture must have character, not be interchangeable. But it must also have respect for its surroundings. For me, some buildings are architecturally appealing but seem out of place.
Architecture also means taking responsibility towards society. How do you and your company feel about this?
That's absolutely true and arises from the fact that architecture is something long-lasting. It also cannot be "faded out", buildings are omnipresent. The responsibility is therefore very great. But buildings also have to move with the times, new and innovative things must have their place. We are not over-preservationists. Even Wilhelminian-style buildings were pioneering innovations in their day compared to what came before. At the same time, they are an excellent example of how well innovation can work over many decades if it is done right. Powerful ideas, in other words.
