113 Architecture questions - Will VR/AR change the planning process?
Will VR/AR change the planning process? (Author: Michael Pitsch)
Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are terms that have been buzzing around for a few years now. In principle, these are computer-generated 3D worlds that can be experienced. In VR, virtual worlds are explored using aids such as glasses/headsets, whereas in AR, additional objects or information are "superimposed" on the real environment Both technologies have developed enormously in recent years. Thanks to faster, more powerful processors, better graphics cards, sensors and cameras, faster internet connections and innovative possibilities in software development, countless new opportunities have opened up for VR and AR.
Large technology companies such as Apple are increasingly focussing on this market. Thanks to the enormous spread of smartphones, almost everyone has the opportunity to use these technologies. Of course, this also opens up new opportunities for architects, who can generate virtual walk-in worlds from the architect's building data. For people who are not used to reading two-dimensional plans, these 3D worlds can provide an enormous advantage in understanding the planning. Everything is possible here, from viewing the planned property in the real environment to virtual sampling, and yes, the planning process is of course influenced by this technology.
As technology advances, planners and developers will be able to optimise the design of buildings long before construction begins.
